DISNEYLAND HONG KONG FENG SHUI
FENG SHUI

In Chinese, "feng" refers to wind whereas "shui" refers to water. Influenced by Taoism, feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space in attempt to achieve harmony with the environment. When the design phase of the park began, a local feng shui master was consulted to make the design more harmonious. Special adjustments and incorporation of Chinese principles are actively compromised to retain sensitivity to Chinese culture, its continuous observation as well as concern towards environment, geography and health.

The location of the Hong Kong Disneyland Park has been carefully planned to take advantage of the surrounding area including the auspicious hill formations nearby. In addition, by realizing feng shui principle to promote success, the locations of the park entrance and the entrances to the individual attractions have been adjusted to maximize energy and guest flow. Fountains are also placed throughout the park to accumulate good fortune.

While the concept was extended to the hotels, both Disney's Hollywood Hotel and the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel have water located to the southwest. To encourage prosperity, the main entrance of each hotel and all entrances to their main public areas have also been maximized for good energy flow. Numbers are also taken into the consideration. Neither hotel has includes the number 4 in its structure: since four is considered an unlucky number in Chinese culture (the Chinese pronunciation of 4 generates a sound similar to death), there is no fourth floor. The Grand Ballroom at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel measures 888 square meters, since 8 is considered lucky (the Chinese pronunciation of 8 generates a sound similar to fortune).

Eight is also the number of restaurants that can be found within the park. Even Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel's signature restaurant, Crystal Lotus, uses the five elements to create a balanced feng shui atmosphere. Skilful and thematic use of fire, earth, water, gold and wood are implemented to ensure the influx of business while decorating the setting with a sensual Chinese touch.

Being attentive to feng shui details, Hong Kong Disneyland is another architectural structure that shares the similarity with many corporations' head offices in the city-the assimilation of local beliefs deep-rooted in the culture. Whether feng shui actually works the way Disneyland Hong Kong wants it aside, it already succeeded in hitting the headlines by such synchronization. And publicity can definitely bring in fortune.
