Disneyland Hong Kong Main Street, U.S.A. Facts
* Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Hong Kong and the original Disneyland was designed to resemble a small American downtown at the turn of the century 1900, just before gas lamps were being replaced by electric lights and the "horseless carriage" was a new invention. Walt Disney's childhood hometown of Marceline, Missouri served as an inspiration. Main Street, USA helps transport guests to another place and time, the heart of the Disneyland experience.
* According to Disney Imagineer Tom Morris, Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Hong Kong is a close reproduction of the Disneyland original as a tribute to Walt Disney's original park and his approval of the design.
* The train station, Main Street buildings, and Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Hong Kong are all close reproductions of the original Disneyland's.
* Critics who complain that Disneyland Hong Kong was built too cheaply argue that the direct copy of the Disneyland originals of Main Street, USA and Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Hong Kong is because the scale is smaller and thus less expensive to build compared to larger scale designs such as those at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, or Disneyland Paris.
* The building facades on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland Hong Kong use more wood molding than those in Disneyland in California, where more stone accents are visible on the buildings. According to Disney Imagineer Tom Morris, this was done because the architecture in Hong Kong is more colonial Victorian, which uses a lot of stone; the wood accents would make the buildings look more different, enhancing the Disney effect of entering another time and place.
* The largest store in Disneyland Hong Kong's Main Street, U.S.A. is the Emporium.
* Walt Disney Imagineers wanted the stores and restaurants on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland Hong Kong to look like they were run by different proprietors, like on a real turn-of-the-century American downtown, so each store has different lighting, colors, decorations, and personalities.
* According to Disney Imagineer Tom Morris, many of the stores are "owned" by immigrants from different countries, so interior design was varied to reflect the different cultures. For example, the baker is owned by an Austrian immigrant, the crystal and glass blower is from Spain, and the jewel shop is owned by a Russian.
* The murals in the Plaza Inn restaurant are reproductions of landscapes illustrated and produced by Disney artists for the Disney animated film Mulan.
* Though the outside resembles an American building from the early 20th century, the inside of the Plaza Inn restaurant has a distinct Chinese feel, with paper lanterns and paintings of Chinese landscapes.
